Year 8 Options Evening takes place on Thursday 13th February. This evening is important as it is an opportunity for our students to start thinking seriously about their plans for the future.
The evening is split into two parts:
- A presentation about the options process highlighting important information about the KS4 (Years 9-11) curriculum.
- An opportunity to meet with different departments to find out more about their subject via a staffed market place of stalls and displays.
Careers guidance will also be available. Doors will open at 4:45pm. There will be two presentations, the first one at 5pm and this will then be repeated at 6pm. Staff will be available at stalls and displays between 5pm and 7pm. The evening will finish at 7pm.
In preparation for the evening the year group will be spoken to during an assembly and they will each be given an options booklet to help them make an informed choice.
At St Thomas More Catholic School we believe it is important that students are able to take a bespoke range of subjects that will suit their interests and abilities, however we feel it is important that these choices are guided to ensure students select options that will give them the best possible chance of success.
All students will take a core curriculum of subjects:
- English Language (1 GCSE)
- English Literature (1 GCSE)
- Maths (1 GCSE)
- Combined Science (2 GCSEs)
- Religious Education (1 GCSE)
- PE (non GCSE)
In addition, there are two ‘pathways’ through the options process. These pathways offer different combinations of subjects which best suit different groups of students in terms of academic challenge and preparation for the future. Students will be placed on a pathway according to their academic ability.
The two pathways are:
The red pathway is designed to give students access to the English Baccalaureate. This will require students to continue to study French and choose one of either Geography or History. Students will then choose two additional options.
The yellow pathway is designed to give students access to a range of GCSE and non GCSE qualifications as well as an option to access the English Baccalaureate. Students will choose one of either Geography or History and then have three open options.
Further information about each pathway can be found in the option booklet.
Our aim for the evening is that students leave with a clear picture of the next steps they would like to take in their education. As always staff will be available to answer any questions and provide additional guidance.
