Sixth Form PSHE

October 2023

Dear Parent/Carer

Sixth Form PSHE

I am writing to inform you that during PSHE sessions for the next half term, students will be completing a unit on making healthy choices.  This will involve covering topics on organ donations, spotting signs and symptoms of cancer and how to complete self-examinations. We are hoping to support this work with an assembly from a teenage Cancer Charity at the end of the term.

I am informing you of this in advance should you wish to discuss any of the themes at home with your child beforehand. Students may also wish to discuss this with you after they completed their PSHE lessons. We can also provide additional information for you as a parent if you require or the website www.teenagecancertrust.org has some excellent guidance for parents in discussing such important topics with young people.

I am conscious that many of you may have family members or friends who have suffered from Cancer and appreciate this is an important health concern to discuss, but also of a sensitive nature.  Our intention of covering this theme, as part of our health unit, is not to alarm students but to make them aware of regular self-examinations, sign and symptoms they should report to you or their GP and to encourage positive discussions regarding their health.

I am confident that you will appreciate the relevance of this PSHE work, particularly when, as a school community, we have had past students who have been diagnosed with cancer at a young age.  Should you wish to discuss the content of this PSHE unit personally please do not hesitate at all to contact me on 01902 368798.

Yours sincerely
