Core physical education

Aims of the curriculum

These are the essential skills and processes in PE that pupils need to learn to make progress:

Developing skills in physical activity

Pupils should be able to:

  • Improve the range, difficulty and quality of their skills and techniques
  • Develop the consistency with which they use and perform skills with precision, control and fluency

Making and applying decisions

Pupils should be able to:

  • Select and use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas imaginatively in complex and demanding, creative, competitive and challenge-type contexts
  • Design original and effective plans that improve their own and others’ performance
  • Respond effectively and imaginatively to changing circumstances as they arise during a performance
  • Organise and manage the environment they are working in to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others

Developing physical and mental capacity

Pupils should be able to:

  • Analyse how mental and physical capacity affects performance
  • Maintain and develop their physical strength, stamina, speed and flexibility to cope with the demands of different activities and active lifestyles
  • Prepare mentally for successful involvement in physical activity, performance and engagement in healthy, active lifestyles

Evaluating and improving

Pupils should be able to:

  • Critically evaluate, analyse and judge the quality and effectiveness of performances
  • Make informed decisions about how to improve the quality and effectiveness of their own and others’ performances
  • Develop and implement imaginative action plans to improve the quality and effectiveness of performances
  • Design original and effective plans that improve the quality of their own and others’ involvement in healthy, active lifestyles

Making informed choices about healthy, active lifestyles

Pupils should be able to:

  • Identify the types of physical activity available to them and the roles they would like to take on
  • Link physical activity with diet, work and rest for personal health and wellbeing
  • Make informed decisions about getting involved in a lifetime of healthy physical activities that suit their needs

Teaching methods and student organisation

Variety of teaching methods from teacher led lessons to pupil organised lessons i.e. games for understanding approach. Pupils are set in ability that allows for activities to be set at the appropriate level to aid progression. Pupils can move between groups if standards require. i.e. pupil makes practical progress.

Progression after Key Stage 4

Regularly getting involved in PE, sport, dance and healthy physical activity within extracurricular activities within school and outside of the school environment. Physical education is currently not timetabled in curriculum time for Key Stage 5 pupils.

After completing PE option subjects the PE department is offering further progression in studying BTEC National level 3 Sport Extended Certificate 

Additional classes and extra-curricular activities

Extra-curricular clubs for a variety of activities take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school in the sports hall. Activities available include trampolining, netball, football, basketball, table tennis, rock climbing, rounders, cricket and athletics. The fitness suite is also open on these days for pupils who wish to improve their fitness and become healthier individuals.

BTEC Award in Sport

Who’s it for?

For pupils that enjoy PE but don’t necessarily play competitive sport outside of the school environment. This course in mainly coursework based with an online examination.

Year 9 – 4 hours over the two week timetable, focused of a variety of sports throughout the year and two hours theory each week
Year 10 – 4 hours over the two week timetable, focused of a variety of sports throughout the year and two hours theory each week
Year 11 – 4 hours over the two week timetable, focused of a variety of sports throughout the year and two hours theory each week

How can you help your child?

Encourage participation in extra-curricular activities, encourage participation in activities outside of school if your child is thinking of an option choice in PE.

Please can we remind you that all pupils need to bring PE kit at all times, this includes when ill or injured! 
Pupils will be expected to change into kit and go out with the group whatever the weather or circumstance.
Please provide a note explaining any issues or problems.

General health guidelines:

To maintain a basic level of health, children and young people aged 5-18 need to do:

  • At least 60 minutes (1 hour) of physical activity every day, which should be a mix of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as fast walking, and or vigorous-intensity aerobic activity. These activities should also involve muscle-strengthening activities, such as push-ups and sit ups.
