‘Of what good is the word of Christ without an example’ (Dostoyevsky)

Recently we celebrated the feast days of St Thomas More and St John Fisher and last Friday we celebrated the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. They are important figures in the Church (Peter is often described as the First Pope) and influenced the way that it developed. They also had to face hardship and are all examples of people who had the courage to stand up for what they knew to be right. They were prepared to do this regardless of the cost to themselves. This was because of their belief in Jesus and commitment to the Gospel. They each had to face personal suffering, yet did so willingly rather than compromise their faith.

Give us courage, Lord, to stand up and be counted, to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, to stand up for ourselves when it is time to do so.
May we fear nothing more than we fear You, let us love nothing more than we love You.
May we put nothing before You. Be it our popularity, money, fame, friends or country.
May we seek no other peace, but the peace that is Yours.
And Lord, make us instruments of that peace.
Open our hearts, ears and eyes, such that we will always know what work You want us to do to make Your peace present in our school and homes.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
