‘The problem for many people is fear. We are afraid of one another – afraid of meeting’ (Jean Vanier)

This week we are invited to reflect on the significance of what happens when we celebrate Mass (Eucharist). Jesus is present, in the words and in the bread and wine, in the community, yet we do not always recognise his presence, just like the apostles on the road to Emmaus.

Luke 24: 13-35 - The Road to Emmaus

As they approached the village to which they were going,
he gave the impression that he was going on further.
But they urged him, “Stay with us,
for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.”
So he went in to stay with them.
And it happened that,
while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, and gave it to them.
With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him
Lord, the night before you died you
said to your apostles, ‘I am the vine and you are the branches; separated
from me you can do nothing; united with me you will bear much fruit’.
Strengthen the bonds that unite us with you and each other,
so that we can all enjoy the peace and unity of a true Christian community, and experience a taste of your kingdom, where you live for ever and ever.
