The move from Primary School to Secondary School is a very important one, and here at St Thomas More Catholic School we want to help you in every way we can to settle in quickly and successfully. We want you to enjoy your time in your new school and achieve great success.
Here are some of the most common questions we are asked about St Thomas More Catholic School:
What is the school day like?
There are 5 lessons every day and each lesson lasts for 1 hour. In the morning you will have four lessons with a 20 minute morning break in the middle. Your lunch break lasts for 30 minutes, followed by the last lesson of the day.
Will I be with my friends in my new form?
We ask all of your Primary School teachers to tell us about your friendship groups, and we then do our best to make sure you are with at least one of your friends.
What's the school uniform like?
You have been sent a uniform list. Each year group has its own colour tie, your year group will be wearing a blue tie with the St Thomas More Catholic School logo.
What lessons will I have?
In Year 7 all students study:
English, mathematics, science, RE, ICT, history, geography, art, music, technology, PE, life skills, and languages.
What if I'm late or ill?
You will need to be at school by 8.35. If you arrive after 8.40, without a note to explain the lateness, you will receive a detention. If you are unwell, an adult must contact the school as early as possible (01902 368798). If we have not heard from home, a text message will be sent to your parent or carer.
What are school dinners like?
We operate a cashless system for buying food. You are able to pay for your dinners at the start of the year or you can add money on a daily basis. When you buy something, the canteen staff will use your fingerprint in order to identify you. Snacks are also available from the canteen at morning break. You can also bring in your own packed lunch to eat at lunchtime. Registration and training will be given on your first day in school.
Can I drink water in lessons?
You are encouraged to drink water as it helps to keep you healthy and improves your learning. You are allowed to drink water in most lessons, but in computer rooms drinking water is not allowed because it would be a health and safety risk. Drinking water in corridors is also not allowed for the same reason. You will be given a water bottle for you to use. There is a water cooler in the dining room for you to use to refill your bottle during your break or lunch.
What clubs can I go to?
There are many different extra-curricular activities that year 7 are invited to, ranging from sport to music. All departments will advertise these in your first week at St Thomas More.
Will I be given homework?
Most teachers will set homework every week. This will be set using Show My Homework, an online tool that will allow you to see the details of the tasks you have been set, as well as its submission status and grades.
