(Sunday is Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of the Church) ‘I pray to thee, O God, that I may be beautiful within’ (Socrates)

We reflect this coming week on the promise Jesus made to send the Spirit of Love, to fill his followers with faith, courage and strength. He kept his promise and the faith and courage of his friends spread the Gospel message around the world. People like, Nelson Mandela, Oscar Romero, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa (you could add many people here). The Spirit we admire in these people is the Holy Spirit, the gift of God.

We live in the forest of this world. We find it hard to see our way, or find meaning in our lives. Jesus, before he left this world took his disciples to the top of a mountain and showed them what could be theirs if they remained faithful to what he had taught them. We can all share in that new world and live in the hope that what Jesus said would come true “where I am, you too shall be”.

Father of Light, from whom all good things come,

send your Spirit into our lives that we may be filled,

with the faith and courage we need to live

faithfully in a troubled world.
