Sunday last was Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of the Church.

‘I pray to thee, O God, that I may be beautiful within’

Socrates

We think today of the promise Jesus made to send the Spirit of Love, to fill his followers with faith, courage and strength. He kept his promise and the faith and courage of his friends spread the Gospel message around the world. We can recognise that some faith in the lives of courageous people like, Nelson Mandela, Oscar Romero, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa (you could add many people). The Spirit we admire in these people is the Holy Spirit, the gift of God. This is why we say that the first Pentecost was the beginning of the Church, if you like its birthday.

Father of Light, from whom all good things come, send your Spirit into our lives, that we may be filled with faith and courage to live faithfully as Christians in a troubled world.

Amen.
